How Much Do Hair Extensions Cost? An Honest Breakdown

Hybrid hair extension install blended into blonde balayage — hand-tied wefts and microlinks — at Theo Salon & Collective, Aurora CO

Hair extensions are one of the most-searched prices in the salon world and one of the hardest to pin to a single number — which is why so many people feel blindsided by the real cost after the fact. Here’s an honest look at what you’re actually paying for, so you can budget with your eyes open before you ever sit in the chair.

The cost is really two costs

Extensions aren’t a one-time purchase. There’s the install and there’s the upkeep, and the second one surprises people more than the first.

  • The install covers the hair itself plus the time and skill to place and blend it.
  • The upkeep is the ongoing part: as your natural hair grows, the extensions need to be moved back up, and eventually the hair is replaced. Most methods need a move-up every six to eight weeks or so, and good hair, cared for, lasts several months to about a year before it’s replaced.

A quote that only mentions the install isn’t telling you the whole story. We’d rather you know the rhythm and the running cost up front than fall in love with a look you can’t comfortably maintain.

What drives the install price

Four things move the number more than anything else:

  • How much hair you need. A little added thickness at the ends is a very different job from full length-and-volume across a whole head.
  • The method — or, usually, the mix. Hand-tied wefts, microlinks, tape-ins and K-tips each suit different hair, and most heads take a hybrid of methods rather than one everywhere. That’s about the right result, not upselling.
  • Your length and density. Longer, thicker, or very fine hair all change placement and time.
  • The quality of the hair. Better hair costs more and lasts longer — a cheaper install that sheds or tangles in a month isn’t the saving it looks like.

Why a good install is quoted at consultation

You can find a flat “extensions price” online, but it almost never survives contact with a real head of hair. A responsible quote comes after a stylist has looked at your hair, understood your goal, and matched the method and amount to you. At our salon, that consultation is where we agree on the plan and the price together — in writing, before we start — including what your upkeep visits will look like, so there’s no math you didn’t sign up for.

A quick honesty check

If a price sounds far below everything else you’ve seen, ask what hair it uses and how long it’s expected to last. Extensions are one area where the cheapest quote often becomes the most expensive over a year. A slightly higher install with better hair and fewer problems usually wins.
